People are Talking About Our Good Works

EAST LIBERTY — BSA scouts and scouters from across Athens County journeyed to Camp Otter Run in East Liberty for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: witnessing the total solar eclipse. The event drew over 70 participants with several local BSA Packs and Troops, including Pack 53, Pack 71, Troop 50, Troop 53, Troop 71 and Troop 7071.

BSA Troop 7071 of Athens County achieved the level of gold in the BSA Journey to Excellence award
program. Such recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the
scouts and their leaders. It demonstrates their outstanding performance in delivering a quality
scouting program and adherence to the Boy Scouts of America principles.

After months of planning and preparation, a crew of seven teenage Scouts and four
adult leaders from Athens went on a life-changing summer backpacking trek
through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New
Mexico.

Athens County officially received approval from Scouts BSA Simon Kenton Council
to charter its first BSA Troop for girls on Feb. 2. The newly chartered troop was
granted the numerical BSA Troop designation 7071 and will become part of the
larger unit 71 of Athens County.
